The National Security Council compiled these series of histories based on top-secret documents covering the major developments in Vietnam from 1964 through 1968. This collection offers large amounts of material from the upper levels of the executive branch, including:

 

• White House Situation Room reports
• Papers of the Vietnam Advisory Group
• Daily, weekly, and special reports from General Westmoreland
• Reports and briefings from U.S. ambassadors to Vietnam
• Messages between United States military headquarters and troop commanders throughout Vietnam
• Communications of the President with Vietnamese leaders

In five main divisions:

• reel 1: presidential decisions on the Gulf of Tonkin attacks of August 1964
• reels 2-3: deployment of major U.S. forces to Vietenam in July 1965
• reel 4: Honolulu Conference, February 6-8, 1966
• reel 5: Manila Conference and president's Asian trips, October 17 - November 2, 1966
• reels 6-8: President Lyndon Johnson's speech of March 31, 1968.

Significant memos and messages to the president are included in each section.
