Where can I get funding to publish my journal article (or book)?
Are you a faculty member, staff member, or student currently employed by or enrolled at the University of Arkansas? If not, there is no funding available from the library. If you are, please visit the Funding for Open Access Publications library guide: https://libguides.uark.edu/OAMoney and watch the short video.
Please note that the funding opportunities described in this library guide are available only for open access publications.
What does open access mean?
Open access means that a publication is freely available online – anyone anywhere who has access to the web can read it. They do not need to subscribe to the journal or purchase an individual article. See the Open Communities library guide: https://libguides.uark.edu/openaccess
I want to make my article open access, and the publisher says I have to sign a Creative Commons license. Which license should I choose?
Creative Commons licenses give readers permission to repurpose your article. Each variation of the licenses gives them different permissions. See the Creative Commons Licenses library guide: https://libguides.uark.edu/creativecommons
If you received a research grant, funding for this article from the University Libraries, or a waiver for the publishing charge (a.k.a., article processing charge or “APC”), there may be rules about which CC license you may choose.
I’m looking at the Funding for Open Publications library guide, but there’s too much information. How do I figure out if my article is eligible for any of these funding options?
Please watch the short video about how to use the flowchart; both the video and the flowchart appear on the homepage for the library guide:
https://libguides.uark.edu/OAMoney/Overview
How do I figure out who the publisher is? (How do I know who publishes the journal?)
Note: The person is asking this question because the OA Publishing Support program is organized by publisher.
Visit the website where the journal is hosted (i.e., the site where issues of the journal are found) and scroll to the bottom of the screen. There, you will find who owns the website (e.g., Trends in Microbiology is published by Elsevier: https://www.cell.com/trends/microbiology/home)
Be aware that if the journal is sponsored by a society, it might be published by a larger publisher. For example, Weed Science is sponsored by the Weed Science Society of America but published by Cambridge University Press: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/weed-science
My journal article is not covered by any of the agreements with publishers listed in the Funding for Open Access Publications library guide. Are there any other options?
You may be eligible for up to $2000 from the University of Arkansas Open Access Publishing Fund. Please see this webpage for information about the fund and how to apply: https://libguides.uark.edu/OAMoney/PublishingFund
My journal article is not covered by any of the agreements with publishers listed in the Funding for Open Access Publications library guide and I’m not eligible for the Open Access Publishing Fund. Are there any other options?
You might ask your department chair or graduate advisor about potential funding from your college.
I still have questions about funding for publications. Is there someone I could talk to?
