Guidance and tips for working with Springshare LibApps

How to Add Boxes

  1. Click the link at the button of the left or main column, "Add Box."
  2. Choose to Create a New Box or Reuse an Existing Box.
    If Reusing a box:
    1. Select the Guide and box you wish to reuse.
    2. Decide if you want to Map the box (default) or make a Copy.

      • Mapped boxes are maintained in one place by one author. Any changes propagate out to all the mapped boxes on the system.
      • Copies are maintained by the guide owner. If they need to be updated, the guide owner is responsible.

Best PracticeBest Practice: whenever possible, map your boxes for ease of upkeep. You may even wish to create a behind-the-scenes template guide (example: "Beth's Boxes") where you store the originals of all your heavily used boxes. Less muss and fuss!
    3. If you are creating a new box, select a type.
Most often, this will be "standard" but see below for other types.
    4. Give your box a name and save it.

Moving Boxes

  • On the Page menu , choose reorder... Boxes.
  • Drag and drop the boxes to a different order or to a different page.

Linking to Boxes

You can grab direct box links and embed codes by clicking on the edit icon (pencil) on the top right of any box when in edit mode. Then, choose the tab for Box Link and Widget Code.

The syntax for box links is:

Box Types - Tabbed Boxes

Tabbed Boxes are similar to Standard boxes except that within the box you can have multiple tabs for content. Each tab can containt multiple format types, just like the Standard box.

There are some usability concerns with tabbed boxes. For one, thing, a search may turn up a page with a tabbed box, and the content matching the search term(s) may be hidden.

Box Types - Gallery Box

Gallery Boxes allow you to create a simple slideshow of

  • images
  • book covers
  • databases
  • LibCal events

These types of slides can be mixed together.

Images should be used with care due to accessibility issues.

  • take care that the caption text has enough contrast to the background image
  • take care that forward and backward arrows do not fade into the background image (the arrows are light grey)
  • provide an adequate description in your caption for screenreaders
  • consider providing the same information in a rich text / standard box.

Box Types - Profile Boxes

Profile boxes can display your own or anyone else's profile. This is the only type of content this box type displays.

To change the user profile:

  1. Add the box with a name.
  2. Save it.
  3. Click the gear / settings tool in the upper right of the box.
  4. Change the user.

Best PracticeBest Practice:

When a guide is transferred from one owner to another, the Profile Box may still reflect the original owner's title. Be sure and check the Profile Box title on guide you inherit. Edit the box titl by clicking the pencil in the title bar.

Profile Boxes should always be in the left column.
