Writing and Publishing: Resources for Researchers and Scholars

This guide is brought to you by the Office of Scholarly Communications, where our goal is to help you reach yours.

How to Market Your Book

Your publisher has experience with marketing books in your field and many channels for drawing readers’ attention to your book. Although each publisher uses a different set of strategies, most likely your marketing team will display your book at conferences, send it to book review editors, create a webpage for it, and nominate it for awards. You can assist by spreading the word through your professional network, collaborating with your university's media team, and looking for promotional opportunities in your local community. The NYU Press Author Toolkit describes common book marketing strategies and highlights ways that authors can participate. The University of California Press created the Author Promotions Checklist with a timeline of the things you can do to start promoting your book in the countdown to publication day.
